Equipment

  • Bowl
  • Mixing bowl

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1/3 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 3/4 cup warm water between 105°F – 115°F
  • 3 ½ teaspoons fast-acting yeast
  • 3 tablespoons fine sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Filling
  • 3/4 cup packed dark brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup caster sugar
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup softened salted butter
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup

Instructions

  • Start by combining warm water, sugar, and yeast in a bowl. Allow it to sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  • In a separate mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. This will ensure even distribution of the salt in your dough.
  • Now, melt your butter and mix it with warm milk. Blend this mixture with the frothy yeast. Pour this into the bowl containing the flour. Stir until it forms a shaggy dough.
  • Scrape the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for about 10 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic.
  • Place the kneaded dough into a greased bowl. Cover with a clean cloth and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
  • While the dough rises, combine the brown sugar, caster sugar, and cinnamon in a bowl.
  • After the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out into a rectangular shape.
  • Spread the softened butter over the dough, then sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture evenly on top. Drizzle with maple syrup for additional flavor.
  • Starting from one long edge, tightly roll the dough into a log. Pinch the seams to seal.
  • Place the log seam-side down in a greased loaf pan. Loosely cover and let it rise again for about 30 minutes.
  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the loaf for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown. It should sound hollow when tapped.
  • Once baked, take it out of the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Then, transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Use Fresh Yeast: Make sure your yeast is fresh for the best rise. Check the expiration date.
  • Room Temperature Ingredients: Use room temperature butter and milk to combine better, aiding in a smoother dough.
  • Don't Rush the Rise: Allow ample time for your dough to rise. This is crucial for texture.
  • Mix Warm Water Carefully: Use a thermometer to check your water's temperature. Too hot can kill the yeast.
  • Store the Leftover Bread: If there are leftovers, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or foil. Trust me, it will keep fresh longer.
