Equipment

  • Large non-stick skillet

Ingredients

  • 1 bag of Trader Joe’s grated potato hash browns
  • 3 tablespoons light cooking oil such as canola or vegetable
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped green onions
  • Pinch of fine sea salt to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika

Instructions

  • Before diving in, ensure all your ingredients are within arm's reach. This makes the whole process smoother. Lay out everything on your counter or table.
  • In a large non-stick skillet, heat the cooking oil over medium heat. Wait for the oil to shimmer. This indicates it’s hot enough for frying.
  • Carefully add the grated hash browns to the skillet. You want them to lay flat and evenly spread across the pan. This helps achieve that golden brown finish you crave.
  • Once the hash browns are in place, sprinkle them with salt, black pepper, and smoked paprika. Give them a gentle stir. This seasoning elevates the flavors nicely.
  • Step 5: Cook Until Golden
  • Let the hash browns cook without stirring them too much. After about 5-7 minutes, gently flip a portion to check for color. You’re aiming for that perfect crispy exterior. Cook for another 5-7 minutes until the bottom is golden brown.
  • Step 6: Add Green Onions
  • When you flip them one last time, add the finely chopped green onions. They’ll add a fresh kick, enhancing the hash brown experience. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes.
  • Step 7: Serve and Enjoy!
  • Once the hash browns are beautifully crispy and golden, remove them from the skillet. Serve them hot on a plate. Get ready for the enjoyment ahead!

Notes

  • Keep Them Frozen: Don't thaw the hash browns before cooking. This helps them crisp up better.
  • Don’t Overcrowd the Pan: Fry in batches if needed. Overcrowding can cause steaming rather than crisping.
  • Experiment with Seasoning: Try adding garlic powder or onion powder for an added flavor kick.
  • Use a Non-Stick Skillet: This prevents the hash browns from sticking and ensures an even cook.
  • Don’t Rush: Let them be. Resist the urge to stir them too early. This allows for that desirable crunch.
