Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Wooden spoon

Ingredients

  • 3 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 2 1/2 cups lukewarm water
  • 6 1/4 cups all-purpose flour plus extra for dusting
  • 3 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary or basil
  • 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/4 cup semolina flour for dusting the pizza peel

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the active dry yeast with lukewarm water. Stir gently, allowing it to dissolve completely. Let it sit for about five minutes until you see the yeast foaming. This shows it’s alive and ready to go!
  • In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, salt, garlic powder, and dried herbs of your choice. This ensures an even distribution of flavors.
  • Make a well in the center of your dry ingredients. Slowly pour in the yeast mixture and the olive oil. Using a wooden spoon or your hands, mix until a dough begins to form.
  • Turn the dough onto a floured surface. Knead for about 8 to 10 minutes. You want it smooth and elastic. If it’s sticky, sprinkle in more flour as needed.
  • Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a lightly oiled bowl. Cover it with a damp cloth and let it rise in a warm spot for 1 to 2 hours until it doubles in size.
  • While your dough rises, preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C). If you’re using a pizza stone, place it in the oven to heat up.
  • After the first rise, punch down the dough to remove excess gas. Divide it into two equal portions. Roll out each portion to your desired thickness and shape.
  • Add your favorite sauce, cheese, and toppings. Transfer it to your baking sheet or preheated pizza stone. Bake for about 12-15 minutes until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbly.
  • Once baked, remove your pizza from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Slice it up, share it with friends, and enjoy every cheesy bite!

Notes

  • Pizza Stone: Using a pizza stone can give you an extra crispy crust. Just make sure to preheat it well!
  • Resting Time: Let the dough rest after shaping it. This step helps relax the gluten, making it easier to stretch without bouncing back.
  • Toppings: Don’t overload on toppings, as this can make the pizza soggy. Aim for a balanced approach.
  • Oil the Crust: Brushing a little olive oil on the crust before baking adds flavor and gives a lovely sheen.
  • Experimentation: Feel free to explore different sauces and toppings. Pesto, white sauce, or even barbecue sauce can offer delightful variations.
